04 Oct Year 6 Evacuation Day
Evacuation day began with a trip to the train station. There was an obvious air of anxiousness as the children patiently waited with their name tags and suitcases to be chosen by a host family. As the day progressed each child was ‘evacuated’ to their families. They had to carry out chores – much to their disdain. We learnt how to ‘make do and mend’ turning our old clothes into handkerchiefs for our loved ones. The most popular activity was making ration cookies from carrots and butter. We thought they’d be awful they were actually really tasty. During the day the air raid sirens went off. Rushing to the public shelter we made sure we were entertained by learning and singing songs! Vera Lynn would have been proud.
