At Holy Trinity Junior School, we understand that the 11+ journey can be both exciting and daunting for children and parents alike. Our approach to the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) is rooted in our commitment to nurturing each child’s unique potential while minimizing unnecessary pressure.

We work with parents to help them find what’s best for their child, for example many children are collected after school by their tutor for the 11+ tuition.

Why Start in Year 3?

We believe that continuity is vital for your child’s development, so we think moving to the school in year 3 rather than in year 5 or 6 means your child is part of the community and has better connections to the area and their potential secondary school.

• Gradual and Organic Learning: The area has lots of tutors with great track records of success in Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET). Moving to the area and starting preparation early avoids the need for intensive cramming later on.
• Reduced Stress and Anxiety: By spreading out the preparation over several years. This minimises the stress and anxiety often associated with last-minute 11+ tutoring. Children have ample time to develop confidence and familiarity with the material and the area. We have connections with local grammar schools so can help increase familiarity with them.
• Focus on Deeper Understanding: Starting early allows us to prioritise deeper understanding and critical thinking skills as well as secure knowledge of the information in the national curriculum. While not every child may want or be able to take the 11+ we work with families to understand the aims and needs of the children. Several of our teaching staff are local and have first-hand experience of the local grammar schools, and the other non-selective schools in the borough.

We use a variety of teaching methods and resources to cater to different learning styles, ensuring that all children feel supported and engaged.

We offer regular assessments to monitor each child’s progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed. We also provide targeted interventions to address specific learning gaps, ensuring that children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Navigating the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET): A Guide for Parents

The Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) is a crucial step for students aspiring to attend grammar schools in the Sutton borough. At Holy Trinity Junior School, we aim to equip you with the knowledge and resources necessary for your child’s journey through the SET process.

What is the SET?

The SET is a standardised test designed to assess a student’s aptitude in English and Maths. It is a multiple-choice exam, and there is no verbal or non-verbal reasoning component. The test is used as the initial stage in the selection process for several grammar and partially selective schools in Sutton.

Grammar Schools:

• Sutton Grammar School (boys)
• Wallington County Grammar School (boys)
• Nonsuch High School for Girls
• Wallington High School for Girls
• Wilson’s School (boys)

Partially Selective School:

• Greenshaw High School (mixed – offers a portion of places based on ability)

Key Dates for the SET (2025 Entry):

• Registration Opens: 1st May 2024
• Registration Deadline: 2nd August 2024
• Test Date: 17th September 2024

The SET Process:

1. Registration: Parents must register their child for the SET through the online portal available on the websites of the participating schools.
2. Test Day: Children will be assigned to a test centre at one of the participating schools.
3. Results: Results will be released in early October. Successful candidates for grammar schools will be invited to sit the second stage entrance exams on 5th October 2024. Greenshaw High School will consider successful SET candidates for their ability places.
