Design Technology
Our DT lessons allow children to creatively and imaginatively design and make a range of structures, mechanisms, electrical systems, textiles and food products.
Children work in a range of relevant real life contexts such as the home, leisure, culture and industry giving children meaning for their learning. When planning and making their products, alongside the design brief, children will consider purpose and needs and wants of the consumer. Children are taught the necessary knowledge to be able to research, design, make, cook and evaluate their own products. Skills are progressively developed through each design and children learn how to select a wider range of tools and equipment according to their functions, properties and qualities in order to meet their design brief. Through the curriculum, children learn about influential individuals in design and technology who have helped shape the world today to inspire the children to become innovators and risk takers.
Our DT curriculum encourages creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills through a variety of exciting projects. In Year 3, culinary skills are honed during a delicious pizza-making session, and artistic flair shines through in photo frame construction. Year 4 combines imagination and craftsmanship, fashioning Krindlekrax’s eye from clay, crafting stylish purses, and illuminating learning with light box creations. Year 5 explores the science of baking with bread-making and delves into structural engineering by constructing sturdy bridges. Finally, Year 6 showcases ingenuity by designing and building cam toys and tempts taste buds with delicious biscuit creations. These engaging projects foster a love for design and equip our pupils with essential skills for the future.
