The school’s very own rich history, within the context of the local area, is a celebrated and inspiring feature of the Victorian era. History lessons encourage the children to ask and answer questions about change, cause, similarity and difference through four overriding themes: conflict and resolution, leadership, lifestyle and technology. The knowledge within these themes links with the development of the History skills: chronology, interpretation, enquiry and communication and organisation of learning.
Children develop a secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history, whereby periods of study are taught in chronological order from Year 3 to Year 6. Each lesson centres around one of the overarching themes, helping pupils to make connections fluently and interpret the past more confidently by allowing them to see how the past shapes the future. Lessons and key vocabulary are carefully planned and structured to ensure that current learning is linked to previous learning and that learning is revisited through use of knowledge organisers, end tasks and Kahoot tests.
History isn’t just about textbooks and timelines; it’s a journey of discovery brought to life through immersive workshops. In Year 3, pupils travel back to ancient civilizations, dressing up and participating in insightful Egyptian and Roman workshops. Year 4 steps into the Tudor era with a visit to the majestic Hampton Court and an engaging tutor-led workshop. The fascinating world of Ancient Greece comes alive in Year 5 through a captivating Greek day and interactive workshop. Finally, Year 6 experiences a poignant Evacuation Day, understanding the challenges and resilience of children during World War II. These cross-curricular days blend drama, art, and science, creating unforgettable learning experiences that spark a lifelong love for history.
