At Holy Trinity our maths lessons have a core focus on children developing their understanding of the fluency skills that underpin mathematical concepts. For each learning point, we ensure that the children are exposed to a variety of representations including concrete, pictorial and abstract to aid fluency.
Our curriculum is designed with small steps of progression that allow the children to demonstrate a deep, conceptual understanding of a concept. Throughout our lessons, the children are guided through rich examples to question, challenge and deepen their thinking and understanding and we encourage them to see links between concepts. Through these examples, we are helping to facilitate the skills needed to be able to reason mathematically and solve problems by applying their understanding. We want our children to understand the importance of maths in the wider world. Our maths curriculum ensures that concepts are retrieved and built on over time. We believe by retrieving and building on knowledge our children will be confident mathematicians and be able to use their mathematical knowledge in their lives.
At Holy Trinity we follow a mastery approach to teaching maths as outlined by the NCETM (National Centre For Excellence In the Teaching Of Mathematics).

As part of this, we work closely with other schools in the borough through half termly ‘Maths Hub’ meetings to ensure that our teaching of maths is up to date and in line with other schools in the borough.
